Salzkammergut

Salzkammergut

The Salzkammergut, as a local recreation area of the regional capital, is characterised by its many crystal clear lakes, the wonderful towns and villages such as Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and Bad Aussee and its superb mountain backdrop.

This unique holiday region owes its name to salt production, which was already operational in the Iron Age. In the monarchy too this area was very popular especially with Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Elisabeth, as a summer resort.

And since time immemorial many artists and prominent people have cavorted around Wolfgangsee, Attersee, Mondsee, Traunsee and Altausseer, like the artist Gustav Klimt, the composers Franz Liszt and Gustav Mahler, to name but a few.
