The Salzkammergut, as a local recreation area of the regional capital, is characterised by its many crystal clear lakes, the wonderful towns and villages such as Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and Bad Aussee and its superb mountain backdrop.
This unique holiday region owes its name to salt production, which was already operational in the Iron Age. In the monarchy too this area was very popular especially with Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Elisabeth, as a summer resort.

A worthwhile destination close to Bavaria: Kehlsteinhaus. The American army called this striking building Eagle´s Nest. The construction consists of metre-thick walls and is located at one of the most impressive sites in the region: at Kehlstein in Obersalzberg.
Originally constructed for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday, today it is visitors who are lead through the rooms. You can get to Kehlsteinhaus from the Blobergerhof in your own car, or on a guided tour which includes a visit to the Eagle’s Nest.
Always worth a trip: the “Bavarian Lake” with its two big islands. Fraueninsel houses a convent, while Herreninsel has a landscaped park and two castles. Neue Schloss Herrenchiemsee was built by the Bavarian “fairytale king” Ludwig II. as a replica of Versailles. Beaches which are kilometres long and themed cycle paths around the lake offer something for everyone..

As long as Königssee is not iced over, it can be navigated year-round.
