The image of Salzburg’s Old Town is characterised by Hohensalzburg Fortress, which was set up in the Middle Ages by Arch Bishop Gebhart. The emblem of the Mozart city is today the biggest maintained medieval fortification in Europe.
The cultural city of Salzburg also has something to offer die-hard art lovers. Around 50 galleries and museums offer superb experiences, from paintings to photography, from the classic to the modern. The Graphics workshop in Traklhaus, Galerie 5020, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Galerie Budja and Galerie Eboran are key places to go to. Of course there are also many private commercial galleries, especially in Salzburg’s Old Town.
The Mozart city also has numerous museums: the Carolino Augusteum, the Museum der Moderne at Mönchsberg, the Baroque museum, Haus der Natur, Rupertinum, the Residenzgalerie, the Dommuseum, the Rainer-Regimentsmuseum, the Trachtenmuseum and the Audio and Film museum in Mozart’s residence – there is something to suit every taste.
He was the first pop star and is omnipresent in Salzburg: whether as an image of the Mozartkugel sweet, or in many window displays in Getreidegasse. The first and most important place in search of the tracks of Mozart in Salzburg is without a doubt Mozart’s birthplace in Getreidegasse 9.
Today in the erstwhile apartment of the Mozart family there is a museum with lots of exhibits from Mozart's life. At numerous places and memorial places his genius lives on for all to see: Mozartplatz, Mozartsteg, the Mozart Memorial and a second museum from the international foundation, the Mozarteum on Makartplatz, in Mozart’s home which in being restored has been kept true to the original.
Live at the largest and most important cultural festival in the world, the Salzburg Festival. Internationally renowned conductors, directors, singers and performers provide cultural pleasure of the highest order in July and August. In over 10 venues, such as the Großen Festspielhaus, Haus für Mozart, the Felsenreitschule, the regional theatre, Mozarteum and the Perner Insel top-class theatre and opera productions will be performed and concerts given.
In the last few years Salzburg has developed into one of the leading trade fair cities in Austria. In the trade fair centre area with the Salzburg Arena, there is also a first-class events hall.
Salzburg Zoo is located beside Hellbrunn Castle. Here an entertaining journey through the animal kingdoms of Eurasia, the America, Africa and Australia awaits. Hellbrunn Zoo presents indigenous and exotic animals, such as rhinos, monkeys, cats of prey, bears and zebras in a surrounding area which is particularly animal-friendly.
Salzburg Zoo has received many awards for this. One special attraction: in summer the zoo is open on Fridays and Saturdays until 11.00 p.m. Hellbrunn Zoo at night offers a very different zoo experience for the whole family at night-time.
Hellbrunn Castle with its fountains are a baroque forerunner of today’s theme parks. Enjoy the unique spectacle with all sorts of water games, which entertained during courtyard parties in earlier times.
Xmas in Salzburg – a very special experience. Salzburg’s Advent market with its punch stands and the aroma of roast almonds hanging in the air awakens long-forgotten childhood memories.
Traditional Advent market with handicrafts, Christmas market, traditional delicacies and much more with Salzburg Cathedral as the backdrop. Extensive programme of events: e.g. daily Advent programme in front of the cathedral, choirs, crib exhibition, the ‘Krampus and Perchtenläufe’, Nikolaus, and the appearance of the Christ Child every Saturday.
